How to Choose a 3D Printing Service in Malaysia: A Buyer’s Checklist
Two 3D printing services can quote very different prices for the same part — and deliver very different results. Before you send your file, these ten questions will tell you whether a supplier is the right fit for your project.

The 10-question checklist
1. Which 3D printing technologies do they run?
No single process is best for every part. A supplier with only one type of printer will tend to use it for everything. Look for a range — such as FDM, SLA, SLS, MJF, PolyJet and metal — so your part is made with the process that suits it, not the only one available.
2. What materials do they offer — with documentation?
Ask whether they stock the engineering materials you need (nylons, composites, high-temperature, flame-retardant, ESD-safe, food-contact or metals), and whether they can provide technical and safety data sheets (TDS and SDS). For regulated industries, ask about certified grades.
3. Industrial or desktop machines?
Desktop printers are great for hobby and concept work. For functional parts, consistent quality and engineering materials, you want industrial-grade machines with controlled build environments.
4. Will they check your file before printing?
A good supplier reviews your file for problems — thin walls, wrong units, unprintable features — before printing, and suggests fixes. See our guides to preparing files and wall thickness.
5. Do they offer engineering and design support?
Advice on material choice, orientation and design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) can make a part stronger, lighter and cheaper. Ask if they can also create or fix CAD files.

6. How do they check quality?
Ask what accuracy they can achieve on your process, and how parts are inspected before shipping. Stated tolerances and a clear inspection step are good signs.
7. How do they protect your designs?
Your CAD files are valuable intellectual property. Ask about confidentiality terms, secure file handling and whether they will sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).
8. Are lead times clear?
Look for stated lead times per process and a realistic delivery date on the quote — not just “as soon as possible”.
9. Is the quote transparent?
Check what the price includes: support removal, finishing, inspection and delivery. Ask how material is charged — paying only for the material in your part is fairer than paying for a whole spool or bottle. See what affects 3D printing cost.
10. Can they grow with you?
If your prototype succeeds, you’ll need more parts. A supplier that also offers low-volume production, urethane casting, moulding or a path to larger volumes saves you from switching suppliers mid-project.
- One process offered for every part, whatever it is.
- No material datasheets, or vague material names.
- No file review — problems discovered only after printing.
- No stated tolerances or lead times.
- Unwilling to sign an NDA for sensitive designs.
- Quotes that leave out finishing or delivery, then add them later.
How to get the most accurate quote
Whichever supplier you choose, you’ll get a faster, more accurate quote if you send: your 3D file (STEP preferred) and any drawing, the quantity, the material or what the part must do, critical tolerances, the finish you need and your deadline.
